Smart Ways to Invest in Yourself

By Thando, Skilled Finances

I’m Thando from Skilled Finances where we talk all things money to help you reach your financial goals. My wife Lindie and I paid off our debts and bought our house with a combined salary of £40k! We believe it’s more about having the right mindset and less about how much you have. You can also follow us on Instagram

Investing your money is not just for financial gain, you can invest your money in other ways that will yield non-financial returns.

Non-financial return is tough to measure but can produce as much, or far greater, gains in your life.

Investing in yourself is the best form of investment you can make, here are some ideas.

Invest In Your Future

What do you want your life to look like one year from now?

Think of your desired career or business, you may want to finally get a driving licence, or you may want a new social circle. be around a different group of friends.

Then break down your dream life into goals that will allow you to build your life the way you want.

Invest in Healthy Relationships

Take someone out for a coffee and build a strong relationship with them.

This can be with your partner, friendships, professional relationships, or even a potential mentor.

Having healthy relationships in your life is key to your overall happiness and wellbeing.

These people will be there for you when times are tough, celebrate your achievements, and help you make better life choices.

 Invest In Your Confidence

Confidence will serve you well in life whether it’s for job interviews, making your move on someone you like, or speaking out against something you feel is wrong.

Think positively. We all have an image of ourselves in our heads and more often it’s a negative picture with thoughts that people won’t like or accept something about you. Photoshop the negative self-image with some positivity and believe that the right people will like and accept you.

Do it scared. If public speaking scares you, volunteer to do a 5 minute presentation, record yourself talking on your Insta stories, or write a speech to read out to your family.

Smile. The simple act of smiling instantly makes me feel more calm and clears my head to think clearly and be more confident with what I’m saying.

Learn Something New

Learning a specific new skill is amazing and super enjoyable.

This can be a new language, cooking, website development, social media management, playing an instrument, or even repairing cars.

You may even consider learning a skill that you can use in the future for paid work.

You can sign up to online courses on Skill Share or Udemy, binge watch a number of YouTube videos, or read books.

Join a community

Being part of a community has so many benefits and has a positive impact on your overall wellbeing. You connect with new people, get motivated to reach your goals, and feel part of something greater than yourself.

Try joining a sports community, reading club, business hub, masterminds and so much more.

You can find a community both offline and online through searching on social media, using websites like meetup, or via a google search.

Invest in Your Health

You have one body for the rest of your life, take care of it.

Eat right, sleep right, keep active and exercise regularly.

I’ve found the simple act of walking can help to clear your mind, take in some fresh air, whilst moving your body.

Don’t make the mistake of prioritising career, money, or materialistic possessions above your physical and mental health.

Taking care of yourself should be high up your list of top life priorities.
